Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl, or laurel clockvine, is a
lilac-colored flowering vine that climbs over trellises and up into
treetops. In Hawaii and other tropical regions, this species grows so
prolifically that it's listed as a weed. Regardless, it has proven
medicinal benefits. Learn the uses for this native from Thailand,
Malaysia, Africa and India in traditional medicine; consult a doctor
before using this or any other herbal supplements.
Heavy menstrual cycles
For centuries, natives of Thailand have
used the leaf sap of Thunbergia laurifolia to treat heavy menstrual
periods (menorrhagia). Rang Chuet or Rang Jeud---as it is known in
Thailand---is made into a tea from dried leaves.
Malaysians crush Thunbergia laurifolia leaves to make a healing juice
for women dealing with menorrhagia.
Both Indian and Malaysian medicine use the leaf sap of
Thunbergia laurifolia to treat ear ailments and even deafness. The
practitioner places liquid from crushed leaves into the patient's ear.
Drug
and alcohol treatment
Thunbergia laurifolia is used in Thailand to treat the common hangover
along with drug and alcohol addiction. Thunbergia has antitoxic
properties and can protect against alcoholic liver toxicity.
Traditionally, the patient sips a T. laurifolia tea throughout the day
to relieve the effects of imbibing. Dried leaves and flowers become a
concentrated, more potent powder form.
The leaves of this soft-wooded vine can become a poultice to help soothe
and heal the pain of cuts and boils.
Anti venom
Listed as an animal or insect bite antidote in old Thai
drug recipes, Thunbergia laurifolia serves as a treatment for scorpion
venom
Diabetes treatment
Many species of medicinal plants treat diabetes mellitus.
A study conducted by the Department of Biology at Chiang Mai University
in Thailand tested Thunbergia laurifolia for hypoglycemic activity in
rats. The study also investigated the effects of the plant on the
reproductive system and pancreas. After a 15-day treatment with
Thunbergia laurifolia extract, the university study revealed that the
diabetic rats had decreased levels of blood glucose.
Anti bacterial and anti fungal properties
Thunbergia laurifolia fights bacterial infections,
including streptococcus, lactobaccili, pseudomonas aeruginosa, escheria
coli, staphyolococcus aureus, S. epidermis and bacillus subtilis. As an
antifungal, T. laurifolia attacks the fungal infections Candida albicans,
aspergillus actinomycetemcomitans and aspergillus actinomycetemcomitans.
Anti toxic and anti inflammatory
Extracts of fresh and dried leaves, root and bark serve
as insecticides, pesticides, ethyl alcohol and an anti-poison in
traditional medicine. The dried root is an anti-inflammatory and
antipyretic agent, helping the body fight against common symptoms such
as diarrhea and fever.
