Elephantopus scaber Linn
With another name this common garden weed is
called Prickly leaved Elephant’s Foot. The whole plant,
including leaves, is used either fresh or dried. Medicinal uses
include treatment of anaemia, coughs, common cold, liver
disorders including hepatitis, and skin disorders.
As a home remedy for liver disorders, the fresh root is boiled
with meat and the resulting brew is taken several times a day
during four to five days.
The fresh stem of the plant is boiled and the decoction is drunk
to relieve stomach discomfort.
It is also used in postnatal care decoctions to restore the
womb. Shoots and roots are boiled together with henna leaves and
guava leaves, and this is given as remedy to restore the womb
after delivery.
This herb is used in Thai winemaking and
researchers there claim that it has cancer-prevention property.
It also serves as brain tonic for more efficient body function.
